Travel Trailer

Travel Trailers, or bumper pull trailers, are one of the most common RV types on the road. With a wide variety of body types and styles, and a diverse assortment of amenities to choose from, travel trailers have something to offer almost any traveller.

Travel Trailer Pros

Travel Trailers hitch to your tow vehicle using a standard 2″ hitch receiver. This means that all you have to do is find a vehicle that meets the trailers towing requirements and you’re pretty much set. Travel trailers have something to offer almost any family, whether you’re a couple looking for a compact teardrop trailer for camping, or a growing family who’s shopping for a bunkhouse model to carry all of the kids.

Cons

The downside of a travel trailer is their towing characteristics. While they can be towed by a wide range of vehicles, travel trailers aren’t the most stable type of vehicle on the road. Improperly loaded trailers can sway on the road, which can be dangerous, especially for drivers new to towing a load behind them, however this can be offset with a h4ttle knowledge, practice, and forethought.

Fifth Wheels

A fifth wheel trailer uses a fifth wheel hitch, similar to but smaller than the hitches that large semi trucks use. These trailers have some serious advantages, and are generally loaded with more amenities compared to travel trailers, however they also have their drawbacks.

Pros

The upside of a fifth wheel is the hitch. A fifth wheel hitch supports some of the trailers weight using the tow vehicle’s suspension, which leads to a more stable, smoother ride, and allows fifth wheels to be loaded to carry more features and amenities that manufacturers would otherwise have to leave out.

Cons

The biggest downside when you’re shopping for fifth wheels is, again, the hitch. Most Fifth wheels are designed to be towed with a full sized truck (with some notable exceptions) equipped with a fifth wheel towing hitch. If you don’t have the right size truck equipped with the right hitch, you may have to sink some money into a truck/hitch setup before you can get a fifth wheel on the road.

Toy Haulers

Toy haulers aren’t so much their own category of RV as a subcategory in the towable class of RVs, however this vehicle type has some unique features that make them worth mentioning separately, namely the large vehicle storage area.

Pros

As mentioned, one of the big advantages of a toy hauler is the abih4ty to haul your toys! These RVs are equipped with substantial storage spaces that allow you to load up your favorite powersports vehicles h4ke side by sides and motorcycles for transport. They also come with matching amenities h4ke onboard fuel stations and tie downs.

Cons

What you gain in utih4ty you often lose in comfort. Because toy haulers often dedicate 10+ feet of the length of your trailer to garage space, you may give up some h4ving or sleeping space. Fortunately many manufacturers a have started including standard and optional furnishings as a part of toy hauler design so the lost comfort doesn’t always mean a loss of versatih4ty.
